Wetlands, which are one of the most productive ecosystems, are low-lying areas of land that are inundated with water year-round or seasonally. Marshes, swamps, seagrass beds, and mudflats are just a couple examples of wetlands. We depend on wetlands as they provide essential goods and services for our wellbeing, which are known as wetland services. Wetlands can reduce soil erosion, mitigate flooding, increase water quality, store carbon, and sustain recreational hunting and fishing.

Carbon Farm
The Duke University Wetlands Center has secured access to 12,000 acres of former coastal farmland (Carolina Ranch) that can now be used as a model system to test carbon (C) restoration designs, biodiversity and resilience theories on the coast of North Carolina.
